2018 U.S. Open Club Championships: Day Two Women’s Recap

The women’s division had the short day at the U.S. Open on Saturday. With the broadcast schedule rotating by division each year, the women’s division is in the “semifinals and finals” on Sunday phase, which meant the championship bracket teams were done early this afternoon.

Heading into day two, both Fury and Brute Squad had already essentially cemented their spots in the semifinals, but the second bids in each pool were still TBD. Molly Brown claimed Pool A’s second spot with a big win over Nightlock, 15-4. The arrival of Claire Chastain was undoubtedly a pleasant addition for Molly Brown on day two. Manuela Cardenas also had a great game for Molly Brown, tallying four goals and two assists. In Pool B, Scandal and Ozone faced off in the last round of pool play; both teams got close wins in their first games of the day and were sitting at 3-1 entering the final round. It was winner take all. Paula Seville, Sophie Darch and Katherine Wooten led Ozone’s offense, but Scandal brought just a little too much. Lindsay Soo was a big pick up for Scandal this year, helping bolster their D line. And with Sarah Lord lighting the way on offense, Scandal was able to pull out the 12-8 win and book their ticket to Sunday’s semifinal round.

Showdown and Nightlock, the third- and fourth-place finishers in Pool A, will face off in a rematch of pool play for fifth place tomorrow. Showdown won their first meeting, in a closely contested game, 14-11.

In what is becoming a common (and still exciting) fixture, Molly Brown will take on Brute Squad in the semifinal round tomorrow morning. Fury will meet Scandal on the other side of the bracket.

Tune into the ESPN broadcast of Brute Squad v. Molly Brown tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. ET on ESPN3 and the ESPN app. The second semifinal, between Fury and Scandal, will be filmed by Ultiworld for tape-delayed release. The women’s championship game is set to air live on ESPN2 tomorrow night at 7 p.m. ET. It’s going to be an exciting day of ultimate!
